Mark Zuckerberg
Mark Zuckerberg is the co-founder, and CEO of Meta (formerly Facebook), one of the world’s largest social media networks. He is a self-made billionaire and one of the most influential people in the world.
Early years
Mark Zuckerberg was born in a very middle class family in New York on 14th of May 1984. At a very young age he developed interest in computer programming. At a very young age of 12 he made his 1st ever messaging app called “zucknet” which was made for interoffice communication which was further used in his father’s office. In high school, Mark Zuckerberg started making small programs and selling them to classmates for $5 each.
Harvard days
He got admission in Harvard University, where he made “Facemash,” a computer program which allowed students to compare their photos side by side online. With the support of his friends he was successful in launching ” FACEBOOK” on February 4th 2004. It was initially meant for the Havard students only. After the 2nd year of his college he made a very bold decision of dropping out, in order to concentrate on Facebook, his dream project.
Social media platform
Facebook crossed over 1 million users at the end of 2004. Now it was no longer only a Harvard student’s platform but was a “social media platform”, which was used by people all over the world in order to connect to family, friends, and make new friends.
Self-made billionaire
Mark achieved his goal of making the social media app a million dollar company before turning 30. Currently more than 2.85billion people are active on Facebook. Zuckerberg is a self-made billionaire with a net worth of over $45.3 billion. He is one of the richest people in the world and has been ranked by Forbes magazine as the 25th most powerful person in the world.
Controversies
Despite his immense success, Zuckerberg has faced several controversies throughout his career. In 2018, it was revealed that Facebook had allowed access to users’ data without their knowledge or consent.
This led to a major public outcry and an investigation by the U.S. government. Recently John Carmack, who worked as Chief Technology Officer for VR at Meta has resigned from his position complaining about the differences with the company CEO. Nonetheless, Zuckerberg has remained at the helm of Facebook and continues to steer the company towards new heights.
Philanthropist
In addition to being CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg is also a board member of several other organizations, including The Giving Pledge and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Together with his wife Priscilla Chan, Zuckerberg has committed to give away 99% of his wealth before he dies. He's already poured millions into education efforts and has pledged billions more to initiatives like curing the world's diseases.
There’s no doubt that Mark Zuckerberg is one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our generation. He has changed the way we communicate and connect with each other, and his impact on the world is immeasurable.
