Hydration: Why It’s so important
Hydration means replacing the lost fluid. The term hydration is often used in terms of adding water that has been lost to the human body.
Water is needed for overall good health. You should drink enough water every day. Your body depends on water to survive. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs water to work properly.
There is no replacement for drinking water and lack of it can lead to serious health problems. If you feel thirsty, it means your body is already mildly dehydrated, so make sure you pay attention to what your body is telling you.
Why is hydration important?
About half our blood is "blood plasma", which is over 90 percent water. Blood plasma is essential for carrying energy, nutrients and oxygen to the cells in the body. Water or coconut water or buttermilk or other liquid drinks help to remove waste products via the kidneys. It also helps keep joints lubricated, the digestive system functioning, the body's temperature controlled and skin plump and strong.
What will happen if you don't consume enough water?
If you don't consume enough water, you may experience symptoms of dehydration such as headaches, dizziness, tiredness, low concentration, constipation and a dry mouth. Being severely dehydrated increases the risk of kidney stones and urinary tract infections.
How much liquid do you need?
As a general rule of thumb, children aged 4 to 13 should aim to drink approximately 6-8 glasses (1 - 1.3 litres) of fluid (water, coconut water, milk or juices) a day. Children of ages 1 - 4 years need approximately 4 glasses of liquid per day.
Experts recommend that males consume 15.5 cups (3.7 litres) of water daily and females 11.5 cups (2.7 litres).
